On the road for ... 1 year, 8 months and 14 days

Clic the Planet to see my trip!

                Next stage : SPAIN - March 2008

Current Position : Béni-Mellal, sky-diving in Morocco

On Mars 15th, 1997, after skydiving with friends on the Moulin Blanc beach in Brest, I took my bike "Magic. 24044kms and 333 days later, I came back to my starting point. The earth is actualy round and magnificient. But it is fragile tto. It is not dangerous, it's the unknown that implies fear. I was specially touched by the russian welcome all over this huge Siberia. This name means goulag and sadness for us in the west but it means a real pleasure for me.

9 years left for this trip but I never forget. There is life before and life after. Every time I see a globe, I wonder how it can be so small I can go round the world by bike.

Magic is impatient to set off again, it is now decided : we leave again on june, the 10th! It will  be ready, so I will. We are A nous les grands espaces, le vent, le soleil, la pluie, sans savoir le matin où nous serons le soir. We are going to ride on this planet without a sound, proud of our wanderer's way of life.

undefinedRecife , the most east city of continent and Dakar the most west city of African one, this is the smallest trip to go across Atlantic . Recife is a huge harbor and a 3 million industrial city; the whole story of the region is kept in old city of Olinda , 6 km further north.  This morning, on the top of Olinda , I was looking at the Ocean in front and the City below with multiple churches and colonial houses and I imagined ships arriving from Dakar or other African harbors with slaves.

undefined

Catholic Church has supported this horrible traffic? A slave under baptism counts for 1, how much counts a free man but w/o any religion? 0, is it? A slave who escaped was considered as Devil’s son. Oh God, I am not dreaming, am I?

Tchao , tchao do Sul! So many souvenirs, how will I digest all this? Thanks to Alain for your advices about Magic, OK for the end of the trip.

undefinedSo sad to pull apart Magic with the help of Alex and Guilherme, my mechanic garage volunteers from Sao Paulo ! It suffered a lot recently from the Andes and corrosion has done a lot of harm with the ships in . The hardest symptom is this crack at the back which I didn’t see because of the paint. I hope that Laurent (Lecorre), my loyal sponsor from the 1st trip who traveled around the world as well is listening … as well as Ronan from Torch VTT! What would do if you were me ? continue like that, it may be ok ? reinforce with some aluminium gaz welding in Dakar ? try another way with some resin ? another solution ? Alain (Guilherm), I would like to get your advice as well. I am demoralized; each screw had his amount of aluminum! 12 yrs old and 70 000 km, it’s quite a lot … Thanks a lot for all your messages but this time I can’t reply individually. Thanks a lot for all your advise on the roads in , I just started to have a pretty good idea but I need a Magic which is in a great shape. I will take a plane for Dakar on the 31st of December and will be above the Atlantic for New Year’s Eve. Have a great year everybody !

I’ve been told that the border between and has been closed to the strangers. If this information

Yesterday morning at 11h38 ( !), we went through the cap of 40 000 km. It will be a trip all around the earth at the , we stopped on the side of the road, Magic has been treated with some flowers and me with a nice beer of 600 ml! The 100 000km were in , 20 000km in , 30 000 km in … no 50 000 ahead !

Really nice this road all the way toward Recife . I have taken the road closed to the sea sometimes: we can use small taxi boats pr go through the Rios, which will prevent me from long roundabout ways. Sometimes I take the road in the middle of the can sugar fields as it is the times of crops. I have been conquered by , people are always very cheerful and positive ! The great common sign is the finger up and to stand up at all occasions. It’s only a gesture but it’s amazing how it creates energy and complicity. We sometimes reduce to football and Samba, but there’s much more: the Brazilian are less addicted to football and the Peruvians, they like to party and they are hard workers.undefined

The poor are well respected and have their own place in the society: in the big cities, sometimes there are favelas closed to the central square and it doesn’t seem to bother anybody. On the side of the roads, some shelters are gathered under the red flag “Association of rural workers with no land”, that’s a great way to use these 50 to 100 meters of land neutralized on each side of the road. In , it would not be possible for them to stay there. L’Abbe Pierre would have had a lot of work in but he would not say so often “but it is not possible !!”. North of Brazil is told to be dangerous, another stupidity ! It’s poorer than the South but much nicer ! But poverty is far more sympathetic and welcoming! But poverty is scary … all the more if it’s black ….

I will arrive to Recife tomorrow, it will be a bit like a marooned against winds and ocean tides. I’m looking forward to stop and calm down a bit.

What a city, 200000 volts! Congratulations to you, Black people, you came here as slaves but now this 2.4-million city is yours, full of your culture all around the streets! Music, dance, songs, religions… you managed to make your richness survived.
I am staying iIMG-0737.JPGn a room which is overlooking the square where slaves were tortured in public, which was legal till 1835 in . To keep your religion, you had named your gods with Catholic Saints names; because this religion was impose by Portuguese and Jesuits who accompanied them. You maked-up your self-defense techniques by acrobatically dance you still practice with impressive leg balancing. I enjoyed a lot walking around your city and observing you: what a lesson of life despite the « chase »for which I forgive you.

Salvador , what a good choice for your city’s name! It is African capital city of the New World , you were brought here with chains on feet, but you survived and made this land yours despite you’ve suffered a lot here. Congratulations to afro-Brazilians and to white sons too because you’ve learnt to live together despite there’s still a lot to share. I am more and more surprised by the proud you have towards your huge country (bigger than the States), “Brasiou" as you pronounce and I can hear every time I meet you.

Winning chase! A young guy tried to steal my camera from my hands. He first took it, then I was running after him, I shout (always shout to warn people around) and after a few minutes, 2 guys are stopping him, he gives the camera back and runs away, “thanks to god” I was told! It’s true, I forgot that one, the whole audience is approving my success by holding their finger high, everybody is happy!

« Transat Jacques Favre » This boat race arrived a month ago from Le Havre but there are still aboIMG-0780.JPGut 20 boats in Salvador that are waiting for a cargo to bring them back in Europe. Steven and Ronan de Fouesnant are going to bring the boat skipped by Loic Poupon and Florence Arthaud back. They invited me very nicely to eat some good pasta on their boat with Sylvie and Alexis, a Belgian couple from the boat nearby. Very nice evening in the middle of those very impressive machines, it is far more complicated than managing a bicycle! Ronan is going to explain me thanks to Internet the winds on African coast which will come most generally from North East, right in the face!

IMG-0589.JPGBlack is the color of the North-East of , when I see a white man, I think “who’s this man, he has a strange appearance”. It’s a really poor area but so touching! The favelas of Rio are 5 stars compared with these shelters made of black plastic which I often see on the side of the roads, but once again, it is not misery and people are in a good mood. 30% of unemployment, an backward educational system, still a lot of development to be made.

What a difference with the modern countries, there are people everywhere: along the roads, in the villages … one has to go and look for water, wash cloth in the river, sell anything on the side of the road. One never feels lonely, we talk and we laugh a lot as well. I have arrived in Salvador de Bahia. I’ve cycled 300 km by bus because I have to be in Recife for the 29th of December (plane for Dakar finally).IMG-0659.JPG I haven’t seen the state of Espiritu Santo as I slept only 6 hours in the bus. I will cross the 40 000 km for Christmas.
